Hey! I never know how to start these blog posts... which is really weird because I am never really without words! The kids and I have been enjoying this cooler weather! The leaves in my backyard are starting to change already! I see hints of red and orange randomly strewn throughout the trees! :) I have been in the mood for hearty meals. Last night my daughter and I made pulled pork for pulled pork sandwiches (they were GREAT!)- it was a BIG hit with my kids and especially my husband! Not to mention it smelled awesome in my house all day!!! I learned yesterday that it's a lot of fun to do the dishes with my 1 year old :) I can honestly say I've never been SOAKED from doing the dishes but, seeing her little face made it ALL WORTH IT!! I wish I could have recorded it... :) We would have been a site to see! As if that weren't enough I had an AWESOME surprise waiting for me when I woke up from my afternoon nap with the kids (hey! I'm pregnant- I hardly sleep at night... I need to take advantage of these 2 hr naps in the afternoon while I can!) to THIS:::::::::::::::::

I'm excited!!! Really unexpected and REALLY a great surprise! If anyone believes in me it's definitely my husband and this... wow, this blows my mind! :) Needless to say I cannot wait until it get's here next week (darn weekend!)

I didn't realize until now that I haven't shared my GOOD NEWS with everyone on here!!! Brian, the kids and I are excited to announce that baby Berke #3 will make their debute in late January!!! :) We are halfway to meeting our newest little blessing!

Hehe no in case you were wondering I have not been craving OREOS... One night I was sitting at the kitchen table with my sister in law when we decided we wanted to know how much the baby weighed... Soo I looked around my kitchen and found OREOS and decided that they were PERFECT! We've been watching baby OREO ;) grow by every couple of weeks noting how many OREOS he/she weighs ;) It's been fun!

A WAAAAY too short visit to Ocean City, Maryland

My husband and I took our children and sister-in-law to Ocean City Maryland last week and had an AWESOME time! I needed to get away and just... relax! The kids had so much fun. My daughter Alyssa is very much a girl- she HATES being dirty so I was a little nervous whether or not she would actually like the beach (this was her first time!). I'm happy to report SHE LOVED IT! :) My son Zachary has been to the beach a bunch of times and definitely enjoyed himself and playing with Alyssa in the sand! :) Enjoy this storyboard I made :) Gosh, I love my babies!!!

Meet the Whitehead Family! {Littlest Heroes Project}

A couple weeks back I was contacted by the Littlest Heroes Project to photograph JEREMY; a sweet, active 2 year old that loves ducks and anything with tires. You wouldn’t know by looking at him but just after Jeremy was born a heart murmur was detected. Upon closer examination a Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) was diagnosed as well as a stenosis (narrowing) of the pulmonary valve. In 2009 little Jeremy underwent open heart surgery to repair the hole and the stenosis. Today Jeremy is a healthy, happy little boy that is expecting a little sister next month!

This past Saturday I met the Whitehead family at Bladensburgs Waterfront Park for Jeremy's Littlest Heroes session. Jeremy is my 3rd Littlest Hero to date! I have another little angel scheduled for the fall! :) Whitehead family enjoy your sneak peek! There's more photos to come. Meet the Levi Family! -Littlest Heroes Project

I was contacted a couple months ago by the Littlest Heroes Project to photograph beautiful Mackenzie; a sweet little 5 almost 6 year old (oops sorry mom!) with a tremendous story. In 2006 Mackenzie was diagnosed with Medullablastoma. After 6 cycles of chemotherapy and 3 stem cell transplants Mackenzie has no sign of a tumor! I was VERY blessed to spend a couple VERY HOT but, fun hours with Mackenzie and her family!

Brian, the kids and I headed out early Saturday morning to meet and photograph this little angel and her family at Hazelwild Farm in Fredericksburg, Va. Hazelwild is where both girls, Mackenzie and Grace attend school. I was REALLY hopeful to beat the heat... ha, not so much! I don't remember the last time I sweat so much! *LOL* Gross! I hate sweating except maybe when I'm working out! :) Anyways, we had a lot of fun! I got to not only SEE but TOUCH a pony! You could only imagine my excitement/nerves when one of the ladies from the farm introduced me to Chloe an 1800lb HORSE! Holy Horse she was GINORMOUS- soo cool! Thank you Levi Family for this experience with me!!!

I cant say enough about the family either! They were incredibly sweet! I'm always a little... hmm, nervous? meeting a family for the first time. Right from the git-go I felt comfortable with the family. Mackenzie and Grace are 2 little girls with such personality! Hehe, I felt looking back at the photos that I got a lot of pictures of the back of the girls/families heads... but, I love these shots! And I LOVE the ones of the girls actually looking at me even more! :) Thanks so much for the experience! And thank you so much for taking my family and I out for lunch! You all are so sweet! I hope that you enjoy your sneak peek!

I am just terrible about blogging on here!!! I'm sorry! Brian, the kids and I just got back from a great 4th of July weekend visiting with family and friends in New York! We had the absolute worse trip back... Well, I suppose it could have been worse for instance if our car died and didn't restart after sitting in standstill traffic for nearly 2 hrs... Yah, that would have been worse. Needless to say pretty much as soon as we got back we went to the dealership and traded in our 2004 Chevy Trailblazer for a brand new 2010 Dodge Journey! :) Ohhh its so nice! AND the best part of it is, I don't have to worry about the car dying! It's really nice! I LOVE blasting the music and singing my heart out! Ohh and the best part is my kids love to sing their little hearts out too! :) :) I am blessed!!!

On another note! I have my 2nd Littlest Hero session this weekend! The hubby kids and I are thinking about heading to Virginia tomorrow night and making a fun weekend of it! This session is going to be awesome on so many levels! We get to celebrate a beautiful little hero and her family AND I get to be the closest I've ever been to a horse! :) It's going to be great! I'm praying for good weather... Oh boy, I just checked my weather bug and it shows thunder and lightning on Saturday... yikes I better watch that closely!

Why are Professional Photographers so Expensive?

In this digital age where everyone has cameras, scanners, and home "photo printers," we hear this all the time: How do professional (or personal) photographers charge $X for an 8×10 when they cost just $1.50 at the drugstore? Simply put, the customer is not just paying for the actual photograph; they’re paying for time and expertise.

The average one-hour portrait session

First, let’s look at the actual work involved:
• Travel to the session
• Setup, preparation, talking to the client, etc.
• Shoot the photos
• Travel from the session
• Load images onto a computer
• Back up the files on an external drive
• 2 – 4 hours of Adobe® Photoshop® time, including cropping, contrast, color, sharpening, and backing up edited photographs. Proof photos are also ordered.
• 2 – 3 hours to talk to the client, answer questions, receive order and payment, order their prints, receive and verify prints, package prints, schedule shipment, and ship.
• Possibly meet clients at the studio to review photos and place order. Meeting and travel time average 2 hours.
You can see how a one-hour (Amanda Berke Photography Sessions range from 1-2 hrs unless a mini session) session easily turns into an eight-hour day or more from start to finish. So when you see a personal photographer charging a $200 session fee for a one-hour photo shoot, the client is NOT paying them $200 per hour.

The eight-hour wedding

A wedding photographer typically meets with the bride and groom several times before and after the wedding. And it’s not uncommon to end up with 1,000 – 2,000 photos, much more than a portrait session. Many photographers spend 40-60 hours working on one eight-hour wedding if you look at the time that is truly involved. Again, when a wedding photographer charges $4,000 for eight hours of coverage, clients are NOT paying them $500 an hour!
(Don’t forget that the photographer 'runs' the wedding day to some extent. A comfortable, confident wedding photographer can make a wedding day go more smoothly.)

The expertise and cost of doing business

Shooting professional photography is a skill acquired through years of experience. Even though a DSLR now costs under $1,000, taking professional portraits involves much more than a nice camera.
Most personal photographers take years to go from buying their first camera to making money with photography. In addition to learning how to use the camera, there is a mountain of other equipment and software programs used to edit and print photographs, run a website, etc. And don’t forget backdrops, props, rent, utilities, insurance, etc!
In addition to the financial investment, photographers actually have to have people skills to make subjects comfortable in front of the camera. Posing people to look their best is a skill by itself. You could argue that posing is a more important skill than actually knowing how to use the camera. A poorly exposed photo can be saved, but a badly posed photo cannot.

The chain store photo studio

Chain stores do have their place. For a very cheap price you can run in, shoot some quick photos, and be done with it. But you get what you pay for.
Consider the time and effort that a personal photographer puts into photographs, compared to a chain store. Store sessions last just a few minutes, while a personal photographer takes the time to get to know the people, makes them comfortable, makes them laugh. If a baby is crying at a chain store, they often don’t have the time (or the patience) to wait because everyone is in a hurry.
The truth is that many chain store studios lose money. In fact, Wal-Mart closed 500 of their portrait studios in 2007 because of the financial drain. What the chain stores bank on is a client coming in for quick, cheap photos…and while there, spending $200 on other items. They are there to get you in the door.

The real deal

Professional, personal photographers are just that—professionals. No different than a mechanic, dentist, doctor, or electrician. But a personal photographer often becomes a friend, someone who documents a family for generations with professional, personal photographs of cherished memories.
Maybe we need to help clients look at it this way: A pair of scissors costs $1.50 at the drugstore. Still, most people will gladly pay a lot more to hire a professional hair dresser to cut their hair.
The added attention and quality that a personal photographer gives is worth every penny.

Conclusion

We hope that those who have taken the time to read this page will have a better understanding of why professional photographs, created by a Personal Photographer are so expensive.

Happy Mother's Day to you all Mommy's out there!!!

Today I celebrate my 5th mother's day!!! 5 years ago I found out that my husband and I were expecting our first child- Zachary Conner. Ever since my world has been turned upside down: I am sleep deprived, my eyes are bloodshot (all the time!), my house is constantly in need of being cleaned, I STILL am struggling to lose the baby weight from both of my children and well, me time doesn't happen nearly enough... Did that stop me (us really...) from having a second child? No way! Brian, Zachary and I welcomed Alyssa Grace in to the world 17 months ago and I can honestly say I do not regret that decision at all- I have come to terms that my house isn't always going to be spotless (as soon as I clean up the mess- the mess returns), I'm destined to be a night owl with my homework and photography work, I'm never going to get completely "rested" but getting a good amount of sleep helps me to be a more hands-on mommy!

I wrote this around Christmas time- My real life Christmas wishlist- I think that it's fitting for mother's day as well... If I could give my kids anything from me this is what I would give them:

Zachary: Zachary Conner is my WORLD. God gave me 2 sensitive and compassionate boys in my life. This little 4 year old boy has been there for me through Brian's deployments, workups, meltdowns and joys. He has saved me from myself so many times and I love him. If I could give Zachary Conner anything it would be more one on one time with mommy. I want to strive this year to go on more mommy dates and to spend more time nurturing his sweet, sincere, compassionate side. I want to teach Zachary many 'things' as he is so smart and excited to learn.

Alyssa Grace: *Wow* This liddy girl... I don't even know where to begin: I get all teary eyed and emotional when I think about my little girl. Goodness... I am so thankful that God chose me to be a mommy to Alyssa Grace. She's a "mini-Manda" and I absolutely love it! She's sweet, silly, talkative and smart, a true momma's girl. She's patient and strong willed! If I could give Alyssa Grace anything I would give her the gift of an un-distracted mommy. At the end of the night when it's just Brian, Alyssa and I it's hard to enjoy having my liddy one up because night time is when I do my homework. This year I give Alyssa the gift of a mommy that prioritorizes her time better so that when the nights come, I'm not stressed and I can give her the one on one attention that she deserves.

I'm in "like" of Spring...

Actually we have a love/hate relationship. I love saying goodbye to winter and cold and hello to warmer weather and flowers. I love playing outside with my children and not having to worry about them getting sick from the cold or whether or not I've dressed them appropriately. I just really, really hate the allergies that I have been plagued with! Zyrtec has been my best friend these days! ;) Come to think of it I actually think I like the change of the seasons more than the actual season in and of itself if that makes any sense... :)

Here are a couple of pictures I took yesterday afternoon of my first ever rose bush... I wonder if I'll be able to maintain it and how many times my kids (4 year old and 1 year old) will get curious and hurt themselves touching it?

My 1st EVER Littlest Heroes Session

Wow! I so know what you are thinking- "Amanda's blogging 2-3 days in a row... w-o-w!" :) *LOL* That's what I'm thinking too! There's been so much going on with school wrapping up (I'm a Masters in Professional Counseling student @ Liberty University alongside my husband Brian), finishing up T&K's wedding, etc! I'll spare you all that's been going on... Life is good! :) I can't complain!

Saturday I spent the morning hours with Lucas, Levi and mommy Kim at my first ever in home Littlest Heroes session. I wasn't nervous to begin with- I had done my homework and mapped out the location of their home (haha Ilove my GPS)! I timed it perfectly knowing full well that it was supposed to take me 35 minutes to get to their home... yah, Saturday morning I decided to go a different route and it only took me 6 minutes to get there! I tell you what, it wasn't until I had to sit still that I got nervous... I called mom, told her to say a little prayer and then moved on... drank a 930am Diet Mountain Dew (*LOL* wow, I know!!! I'm a diet soda-a-holic!), listened to some worship music and got my camera gear ready! I worried a little- with no reason to! My Littlest Heroes Mommy was such a sweet, kind woman and welcomed me in to her home. I was introduced to Lucas- my littlest hero and his little brother Levi; both boys so sweet. Lucas is a 3, almost 4 year old little boy with delayed development. Both little boys special in their very own ways! What an amazing experience to see the love that this family has for each other! :) Without further a-do here's a sneak peak from Lucas's Littlest Hero photo shoot {My favorite pic & slideshow of images)!

I've been doing a lot of thinking... I spend a lot of time looking at everyone elses work (I call it "getting inspired"... lol) but found myself trying to find what makes my photography special and what makes me stand out from other photographers... have you ever thought about that? It's been a challenge to look at my work as good when there's so many great photographers out there... I found this quote on Jasmine Stars blog the other day and really like it-

"We all have our own unique abilities. Don't focus on what others can do, but, rather, what you can do to make yourself better. You taught yourself photography, and you're getting better each day...don't envy his work. Appreciate his work. And appreciate yours."

I know I have been terrible about blogging on here on a consistent basis but I'm trying! This past weekend was ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL OUT! Such a tease because today is rainy and miserable out! My son Zachary is 4 (12/24) and boy is he fast, deliberate and ALL BOY. My daughter Alyssa is a little "girlie girl"- She's learning to walk outside on uneven grass and boy does that give her trouble. She'll fall and look at her dirty hands and run to me "ewww" :)Oh and yesterday Zellie the bully German Shepherd knocked Alyssa off of the porch where she face planted in to cement :( The poor girl has a HUGE EGG on her head! :( She's alright but, it was scary- she never screamed like that before!

My kids are so much a like yet so different and it's AWESOME! My husband and I are blessed that's for sure!

Trisha & Kevin's Wedding Part II!

:) I tell you I am terrible at updating this photography blog of mine. As promised though I wanted to get on here and update you all on more sneak peeks of Trisha and Kevin's wedding! :) So here they are! Did I mention how much I enjoyed getting to know Trisha and Kevin through this process and how thankful I am that God put them in my path?! :)

PART II: I met the girls at the salon around 1pm and headed on over to the ERIE TRACKSIDE where the reception was going to take place a couple hours later. :) Kevin's sister made the wedding cake and I HAD to get a sneak peek ;)

Somewhere between the quick run in to the Erie and mad dash to Wendys to grab a quick bite, I realized that I FORGOT DRESS SHOES!!! Pink and white Nikes do NOT go with black dress pants... Oh man was I a bundle of nerves! I ran in to Payless which was real close to the hotel that I was meeting the beautiful Bride and Bridesmaids to take some pre-wedding pictures. I literally ran in and out and got some cute, flat, painfully uncomfortable dress shoes and ran over to the hotel. ;) For the next hour or so I photographed Trisha, her bridesmaids and family:

Shootsac by Jessica Claire!

Well guys! I did it! :) I finally bought a shootsac! :) I seriously have been talking about getting one for a while now sooo what better time to buy one when they are on sale? I am so excited!!! I'll let you know how I like/LOVE it! :) I ordered it Monday and I have an email tracking it through UPS saying it's going to get here Thursday! That's super fast! :)

If I had to describe Trisha and Kevin in 1 word I would use -CONTAGIOUS- Everything about these guys is contagious- the way Trisha smiles when Kevin's near. The way he looks at HER! Ahh, it reminds me of Brian and I (my hubby!). I love my husband so much so when someone else finds the same kind of forever love I can't help but be excited for them! Anyways, enough rambling from me! Congratulations Trish & Kevin!

Littlest Heroes Project

A couple months ago a friend of mine (Mandi!) posted some pictures of a sweet little girl that she had met and photographed through the Littlest Heroes Project. After researching the Littlest Heroes website for myself, I immediately fell in love with the heart of this project; photographing little heroes- little boys and girls that have fought or are fighting a serious illness.

I am happy to say that this evening I found out that I have been accepted as a photographer for the Littlest Heroes Project! I cannot wait to meet these little heroes and give their families the gift of precious photographs! "Capturing Miracles, Picturing Cures."

So what you do you think?! This is one of my first attempts at an actual "logo" :) I'm so not creative... It's one thing to see in my mind a vision and another to put that plan in to action- ahem on my computer screen... Does that make sense? Basically I wish I were more creative!

My sister and I had so much fun photographing Trish and Kevin! I seriously mean this when I say it- up until this point in my life I didn't think there was anything more beautiful than fall until I had the privilege of photographing 2 people in love. Fall Minis {Baby Love}

I just wanted to get on here fast and thank all of you that participated in my first EVER fall minis! I'd definitely have to say that they were a great success- thank you guys! I had fun meeting everybody- I wish the weather cooperated more; Saturday's rain was un-relentless! I did get to meet and photograph Baby Logan! Here's a sneak peek of this little precious!

And when my children cooperate for me to take pictures of them. Alyssa is in this stage (a couple days shy of being 10 months old!) where she will NOT sit still for the life of her! She's good for a couple but, that's it- she wants to explore. Zach usually runs from me when I take out the camera BUT yesterday he let me and even POSED for a couple pictures for me! So I have to share- here's my babies!

One giant step for me...

Well guys, I did it! :) I completed my first year of Grad school (professional counseling)! Now that school is done until August, I am dedicating my time to my first love- photography. I took a GIANT leap tonight and purchased my photography site! Thank you Brian (hubby!) for being so supportive of me! Also, my babies- Zachary Conner (3) and Alyssa Grace (5 months)- you guys are the best models ever! (: I love you with my whole heart!
